The most Oregon-y Father’s Day

We celebrated Father’s Day in full Oregon style.

We began with a hike to Old Salmon River Trail outside Welches. The path was an easy grade along the river, which Peeper loved. She was fascinated and couldn’t tear her eyes away. Her finger got quite a workout as she pointed at it for, oh, the entire hike.

We walked through the old growth forest and marveled at the enormous trees. As the rain came down harder, though, we zipped through uncovered stretches (“quick feet, quick feet!” Eric would say, echoing what he tells his students when they have to hurry through the halls).

The trees didn’t offer quite as much cover as we’d anticipated, and the 10-30% chance of rain turned into more of a 100% situation, so we had to turn back earlier than we’d anticipated.

We’ll definitely be back to hike in the area, though. In fact, we’re renting a cabin to celebrate Peeper’s birthday nearby there, so we’ll have plenty of opportunity to try out some more trails near Mt. Hood.

Continuing the Oregon themed Father’s Day, I cooked a salmon steak for Eric’s dinner, and he drank a microbrew. When I was shopping for the fish, I couldn’t find the lemon. The produce guy had to go to some secret stash behind the fish counter to find me one. Thank goodness—can you imagine salmon without a spritz of lemon? (Does anyone know what the deal is with missing lemons? A bit of research told me there’s a lime shortage, thanks in part to a Mexican drug cartel putting pressure on farmers, but I didn’t see anything about lemons.)

Peeper tried the salmon, too, but was more interested in blueberries.

A hike and a special dinner were the least we could do to celebrate Eric and his new role as dad. Spending the entire day together was a treat—better than cufflinks or a schmancy meal out for sure.

What did you do for the holiday?

That is a wonderfully Oregon celebration! I hope I will be celebrating our next FD (or the one after it) in a like fashion. For this one, Disneyland was–as always–our destination. 🙂

Over in my household we had a “Breakfast for Dinner” with friends on Sunday evening. That’s a great photo of Peeper in mid point and full of wonder and Eric laughing!

My husband isn’t a dad, unless you count our dog. Both our father’s live out of town too. So we spent the first half of the day at the Hagg Lake swim and the other half celebrating Father’s Day with our great friends (and Godson) doing a little hiking and bbq.

That seems like a great way to celebrate Father’s Day! And yes I did hear about that lime shortage – kind of crazy!

Sounds just perfect! My father and stepfather live in Wisconsin, but I looked through some old pics of me with them and that was pretty fun! Peeper’s eyes are just so alive and ready to absorb it all. Very sweet 🙂

We spent father’s day talking to our dads on FaceTime (mine’s in Chicago and my husband’s is in Cali this week). Kinda wishing I’d gone for a hike!;)
