Travel without my toddler

Today I’m headed up to Seattle for a brief business trip—without Peeper. I’ve never been away from her for a night, and now that she’s almost 16 months old, I bit the bullet and scheduled this overdue outing.

I don’t know how it’ll go. I’ve been imagining two scenarios:

1. I take an uninterrupted bath, order room service, lounge around the hotel room in a cushy robe and watch cable.

2. I cry uncontrollably, Skype with my husband so I can see Peeper sleep on the baby monitor and go to my meetings with puffy eyes and an emotional hangover.

Thanks to some strange timing, today’s trip is a trial run. My sisters, brother and I are converging on Santa Fe for an unprecedented siblings weekend, so I’ll be spending three days away from her then, too.

I’m already feeling the guilt at leaving her, and I’m still at home. This’ll be hard—but hopefully rewarding, recharging and fun, too.

Wish us all luck.

best of luck! i am sure it’ll be a combination of both of those scenarios above and you’ll be all the happier to head home to her at the end of it!

Thinking of you on this day! You’ll both do great, and I’m sure the hugs and snuggles will be plentiful when you return 🙂

Thank you Marlynn! I’m counting on Peeper banking all those hugs for when I get back tomorrow.

I am guessing you will do both. A few months ago, I went away for a business trip and while I enjoyed the silence, I ached to see my girl. Good luck mama. Don’t feel too bad. She will be fine and it will make all that much sweeter when you see her again.

I’m sure you’re right—and it feels good to hear I’m not alone. Thanks!

Good luck! My first night away ended up being so welcome. I loved the time to myself but, from a distance, felt even more assured that my life here with kiddos and Anthony is exactly what I want. I so enjoyed the quiet … and the room service. 😉

Thanks Deb. I knew my first full day away had to happen sooner or later. So far it’s been good—and sad.

I’m sure the prospect of your trip sounds simultaneously exciting and heart-breaking. I hope your visit includes a little Skype time AND a little bath/robe time.

Yes—like much of parenting, it has involved high highs and low lows. 😉

It takes all kinds of mamas, doesn’t it! I’d have a tough time traveling all the time, too.

You can do it! It will be hard–especially the first time–but you’ll both survive and think how WONDERFUL it will be to see her when you get home!

I loved seeing you in your cushy robe, propped against plump, puffy pillows. Edie very much missed you, but she’s been a trooper. Yes, she’s banked hugs. But that’s not all: she also has every single book in her library lined up waiting for your lap! xoxo
