North Pole, Oregon

In the days leading up to Christmas, Peeper kept sneaking glances out the window. “It’s going to snow soon,” she said.

Yet the rain continued, and snow refused to accumulate.

The lack of powder was even more cruel considering a huge snowstorm stopped her Aunt Amy and Uncle Luke from driving down for the holiday. At least Peeper got to see all the snow on FaceTime when we talked with my sister.

Then finally, finally, over the weekend it snowed!

Snow storm in PortlandIt was still dark when Peeper woke up singing. But Eric and I got her out of her crib, draped a fleece over her footie pajamas and opened the front door. Huge, fat flakes were drifting down. They were glowing and backlit from a streetlight and the neighbor’s Christmas lights.

Peeper’s eyes were wide. “It’s snowing,” she breathed.

After eating what passes as a meal in her book, we all bundled up to go outside. Eric, a Michigan native and expert snow angel-maker, taught her to make snow angels. Peeper couldn’t believe how good snow tasted. And she and Eric made the tiniest snowman on record.Toddler eating snow

World's tiniest snowmanWorld's tiniest snowmanWe only got a half-inch or so, but it was Kiwi’s first snow. She loved watching her big sister sprint around the neighborhood. She even took a taste of snow—and then another, and another.

Does snow count as a first food?

Or, as Peeper said, “Here’s the North Pole right here!”

It all turned to ice, but we took Peeper out when we walked our dog, and the slippery walk was just as fun (and hilarious!) as the snow!

I nearly died at how adorable she was in her purple outfit. Those pants are just too much! I hope you all got some snowy play time too!

So sweet! I grew up in Massachusetts, where snow was not rare, but it’s fun seeing what a treat it is for these little Oregonians we’re raising.

Yes! Peeper was disappointed last year when we got NO snow, so this was a special treat.

My kids had such fun in the snow yesterday. Today, they are camped out in front of the tv thanks to the “ice day.” SIgh!
