DIY Mother’s Day gift for a mom-to-be: Pregnancy journal

This DIY Mother's Day gift is great for pregnant moms! A pregnancy journal with prompts. Ten Thousand Hour Mama

When I was pregnant with Peeper, and then with Kiwi, I did my best to record my thoughts, feelings and hopes for them. My journaling success was hit or miss with them—some nights I wrote long entries about the fluttery feeling of a tiny baby moving inside me; some nights I was too exhausted to do anything beyond flopping into bed. This year, I wanted to make a DIY Mother’s Day gift for some friends who are expecting so they, too, could remember this incredible time.

After some thought, I made a DIY pregnancy journal for two friends who are expecting their second babies. I know from experience that when you’re pregnant with Baby #2, you’re just not as focused on the pregnancy—after all, you’re too busy memorizing Daniel Tiger songs and ensuring your little daredevil doesn’t dart into the street. So I came up with these 30+ journal prompts—questions that will encourage a mom-to-be to reflect on her hopes and thoughts during pregnancy.

Journaling during pregnancy

Why keep a pregnancy journal? Well, mommy brain is a thing. And it begins when you’re pregnant. So all those details you’re sure you’ll cherish forever—seeing your baby move during an ultrasound, your partner’s reaction when you shared the Big News, weeping in the maternity clothes store changing room because life is just so beautiful—are fleeting.

Without making a conscious effort to remember and record the details of your pregnancy, too many of those memories will be lost.

The thing is, mommy brain sometimes also makes us uncreative. So having an envelope full of prompts conveniently tucked inside a pregnancy journal can give a mom-to-be ideas about what to write about.

What was your first thought when you found out you were pregnant?

What about the world do you hope is the same when your baby grows up?

What parts of your partner do you hope your baby will inherit?

These questions make great entries in a pregnancy journal.

DIY Mother’s Day Gift: Pregnancy Journal with prompts

I made a DIY Mother’s Day gift for only a couple of dollars, and it took just a few minutes.

I made these for Mother’s Day, but they’d make a wonderful baby shower gift, too!

When I wrote the prompts, I made questions for a mom-to-be. You could just as easily write them for a mom with older kids, too! Or make a version for your mom—she’d love it.

One thing I love about a pregnancy journal is it makes a record for moms to look back on—and share with their kids when they’re older. Writing a pregnancy journal creates a family heirloom.

So why not make one for a mom in your life this Mother’s Day?

That’s a great idea!! The prompts sound so helpful, I can imagine it’s hard to think about what to memorialize.

Smart, and much more personal of a gift! I don’t have a need for this right now, but I’m definitely going to remember it for myself and as a suggestion for others!
