My friend from grad school always looked snappy. Whereas I tended to teach in jeans and a sweater, Erica sported bow ties. So when she and her wife announced they were expecting, I knew exactly what I wanted to make them.
Their beautiful baby girl was born in December, but I just now finished her gift. Better late than never!
Behold—onesies with interchangeable bow ties!
Baby bow ties for fashionable babies
I sewed snaps onto the baby clothes so Little Q’s mamas can switch out the bow ties. I also enclosed extra snaps so they can sew them onto other onesies.
I love this project partly because you can use up scraps you have lying around. The orange one, for example, was made from leftovers I salvaged from the seamstress who made me a dress in Ghana.
Ages ago I had pinned a tutorial on how to make them, but by the time I hauled out my sewing machine months later, the web site had been taken down, so I just winged it.
I’m happy with how they turned out. The only thing I would have changed is sewing snaps to onesies of different sizes. That way it would be easier to keep the bow ties in rotation as Q grows.
If a tiny in your life needs a dapper accessory, here is a tutorial, from the blog Slow Mama. (The instructions are almost identical to what I ended up doing.) I don’t recommend hot gluing the bow ties, though. Slip-stitch those suckers together for durability! Babies drool and spit up and drip milk all over the place, so making them sturdy enough for the washing machine is plenty important.
Welcome to the world, Baby Q! You’re now as stylin’ as your Momma E—I’m sure you’ll inherit her intelligence, sense of humor and dedication to justice, too.
The photos don’t do these awesome cute onesies justice! They’re darling, and Baby Q looks fabulous in these. I can also see someone adapting this for a snap-on rose, tie or hey, even a bib. Pretty cool! I love it too that you take the time out of your smooshed day to share your creativity and joy with others. Way to go!
I love that idea! Maybe I’ll have to make a bunch of rosettes, fabric butterflies and the like for Peeper!
These are adorable!!!
Thank you!
Just adorable and very customizable! I have a baby boy that I would definitely buy one for. Thanks for sharing!
Of course! I’m pretty sure there are some similar on Etsy.
This is very cute. It sometimes seems a little unfair that girl babies get all these cute little headbands, so dressing up the boy with an interchangeable bow tie brings the accessorizing to both!
Equal opportunity accessorizing – love it!
Cute!! Snap-on is a great idea. We did something like this for my friend’s baby shower and just sewed them on to a bunch of onesies in different sizes. So cute!
