From about the time I began to show, Peeper started to talk about how a baby was growing in Mama’s belly. She would point to my bump and sometimes wave to the baby.
One night, when Peeper had eaten a particularly large portion of tuna mac, Eric remarked on how big her belly had gotten.
She looked down at the round drum of her middle. “Maybe baby in there,” she said.
We, of course, were floored.
After that, she got a little confused. “Baby in there!” she’d say of just about everything—Eric’s belly, Finn’s belly and, particularly, my breasts. (That last one was slightly awkward in public.)
Now she makes it a game, naming everywhere the baby isn’t. “Not a baby in there,” she’ll say about everything. “Not a baby teeth. Not a baby mama mole. Not a baby dishes. Not a baby rocking chair.”
So she may not know exactly what’s going on—the details of a growing fetus are a little beyond a 20-month-old’s comprehension—but she well knows where the baby is not growing.
That’s a start.
Kids are funny! Congrats on the baby 🙂
Thank you, April!

Agreed! I’m glad I’m capturing moments like these on the blog and in a day planner I use as a mini Peeper diary.
Haha! Kids say the absolute most adorable things. She sounds like a very observant child, I’m sure the baby to come will also be creatively perceptive 🙂
She is constantly surprising us with the connections she makes!
How darling! Kids always have a way of giving us such a clear perspective on the truths of life. It is all such a mystery.
Absolutely! They are perceptive little creatures.
Very cute. I remember my first big question was where the baby came out, and through the belly button seemed like a reasonable option. I asked one of our babysitters, LOL!! She probably wasn’t too pleased about that.
Haha! Yeah, that’s definitely a question you send to the parents. 🙂
It’s probably best that no one mention “food baby” bellies at this stage I believe… 😀
Hahaha totally!
That is so cute! When I was pregnant with our second, we borrowed a lot of books from the library about being a big brother to read to our son. It’s a difficult concept for a young child to grasp, but after reading so many books, he began to understand, and I must say he has turned out to be a wonderful big brother!
Aw that’s so sweet! We’ve borrowed some big sister books and own a few, and although I’m not sure they’re helping her understand, she does like them!
It’s crazy how hyper aware kids are – especially of mama. Or so I’ve noticed. I miss hearing my oldest point to my pregnant belly and say “baby”. It went by so fast and now they’re both here. Fun stuff.
I thought my first comment fell through, so I retyped some other thoughts. Looks like they both went through, haha. I promise I’m not crazy. 🙂 Congrats on your baby.
How very cute! Blessings on your pregnancy and baby.
Also so behind! Congrats!!!
Thank you Lindsay!
